Designers. What’s the first thing that pops into your mind when someone says this word?
Web designers, graphic designers, funny little guys and gals in black roll-neck jumpers, trendy spectacles, driving Saabs and talking gibberish while charging you the earth for something seemingly simple? After all, can’t everyone design? Maybe some of you think we do this because we are skilled in nothing else and all we do is ‘push a button’ from our overly swanky design agency? Perhaps we do it for a hobby, smoking roll-ups and mooching about, un-motivated, arty and designing this and that out of the goodness of our own hearts? I’ve met, and still work for, clients that used to think both of these extremes.
Sorry. Not this designer. Nor any I work with. Maybe you’ve had the misfortune of dealing with both those cliches above. Maybe that’s why you have those opinions?
Me? I’m here to use my design skills to make your business better – perform more – and ultimately, make you money.
Okay, I get your point. So how can design help my business?
It’s a crowded market out there. There are a lot of businesses all competing for attention – and customers. And every day more and more turn up. Some survive, some go bust, and some succeed. From what I have seen the ones that have the best chance of succeeding are the ones who differentiate themselves by being professional – not only in business, but in appearance.
Your website for one.
A 24 hour, 365 days-a-year shop window, advert and salesman all rolled into one. If you were going to employ a person to do this for you, how much would you pay them? £9.99 a month or a reasonable fee that befits the professional quality, and amount of work they are going to do. You’re not always going to be there to check that they are doing it right, prompting them with the answers you wish they would deliver – you have to trust them, believe in them and know that they are working just as hard as you are.
How about your logo?
It’s your brand, who you are, and what you stand for. It’s the equivalent of how you speak, what you wear and how you want to appear. Again, let’s ask this as if it were an employee. Sharp, professional and strong, or cheap, generic and works for 50 other companies at the same time.
Your promotional flyer or brochure?
This equates to your salesman who walks in to a meeting, confident, convincing, great tone of voice, imaginative words, believable and trustworthy. Alternatively you can go for a monotone, take-it-or-leave-it approach, the cheapest option available and hope for the best.
You’re trying to get me to spend money. I get that…
You’re right. Unashamedly I am but that is because it’s worth every single penny. But maybe you would like some proof? The well respected Design Council broke this down in their report.
They discovered that for every £100 a business spends on design, turnover increases by £225.
Hard to argue with that isn’t it. We all know about false economy, buy something cheaper and you will have to replace it quicker, or it will not work as well as if you had just spent that little bit more. I’ve got a car just like that myself. But when you are talking about your business, your livelihood, then surely it matters all the more. You don’t have to spend obscene amounts of money to achieve well designed and professionally conceived marketing materials, but to employ an experienced professional you need to pay a competitive, reasonable price . How about I put a figure to you, for a package that will ensure you look, and sound, the part?
£3000. That’s it.
£3000!? What do I get for £3000? It seems a lot to me…
